Review: What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang

What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles, #1)What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang
343 Pages
Release Date: September 18th, 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins
Genre: Dystopian/Sci-Fi
Rating: 4 STARS
Source: Library

Goodreads Summary:

I should not exist. But I do.

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

MY THOUGHTS:
(S/N: I WILL BE DOING THIS FOR COVERS I JUST LOVE!) The whole half face thing on the cover...? Yeah, its awesome and it totally fits the book. Plus the "ME" in caps, it set Eva's emotions just perfectly. So props to the jacket artist/designer of this cover!

Okay not onto the book! I actually didn't have that high expectations for this book. I just saw it on the library shelf calling my name. And let me just say one thing: This concept is plain crazy yet brilliant in so many ways. It was pretty weird thinking of the two characters in one body (that totally reminded me of The Host) but it eventually worked out. (Also, I'll be labeling this book as a si-fi more than a dystopian in this post because of all the sciency terms and stuff)

Addie, the dominant soul, the one who has control over their body. Addie the one who loves Eva but also wishes to be normal and settled like the others. Eva, the recessive soul, the one behind the curtains, always there watching. She's one determined soul and super observant. Eva was obviously my favorite of the two sisters, and it may just be because I read more from her POV or because she's the main character. I felt that Addie depended a lot on Eva without really knowing and Kat does show us that. As the story grows, the thiker the walls between the sisters yet it ends up breaking and they were the best friends/sisters that always were there for each other.

Kat Zhang did a wonderful job building the plot and new which direction to head it with. She effectively manages to keep the plot moving, the suspense to increase, and keep you thoroughly enjoyed throughout the entire book. However the story moved a bit slow in the beginning and had some unnecessary scenes in the beginning as well. The romance between the Eva and Ryan was cute but kinda awkward since Addie and Devon are still there...
What's Left of Me is a great sci-fi read and many of you will love it! And as more secrets are unraveled, the more the deadly things get ad the faster the time counts down....

Venom Readalong Week 4

Hey guys! The Venom Readalong is hosted by two lovely ladies, Nikki at Fiction Freak and Annabelle at Sparkles and Lightning. These are my answers for this weeks questions. Enjoy...

1) Michel de Montaigne is quoted a few times. How did you feel this contributed (or did not contribute) to the novel?
I for one thought it kind of didn't really matter but it did build a bond/understanding between Paolo and Cass.

2) Did you trust Falco the whole time?
NO! I'm sorry Falco but you were just too suspicious....

3) Did you find the character of Siena and her habits or fancies cliché overall?
I guess it could be considered "cliche" but feelings are feelings. Nothing you can do about it, cliche or not.

4) As a whole, did you feel this book was sufficiently creepy and mysterious?
I don't think it was creepy but most definitely mysterious.

5) Do you think Cass made the right decision concerning the boys in the end? Would you do what she did (answer without spoiling!)
I LOVED her decision! She made it right with both guys. And I would've made the same decision as Cass ^_^

6) Were you right about the murderer? If not were you surprised?
No, I wasn't right. But I wasn't surprised either.

7) Now that you've met both, what Team are you?
Team CassFTW!! Or is it GirlPowerFTW??

8) What were your immediate thoughts after finishing?
When's Belladonna going to be coming out? *signs in to Goodreads*

QUESTIONS FOR THE VENOM READALONG FROM FIONA, WEEK 4

1) Were you surprised when Luca returned to Venice? Why or why not?
Nope because the letter and her friend's wedding foreshadowed that he would be coming back eventually.

2) Did you find Luca to be more protective or controlling of Cass? Why do you feel that way? What secrets did you initially think he was keeping?
I do think he was more controlling of Cass because he even said that he didn't think woman were capable of doing other things. But I think he had the right to be protective of her with all the murders going on just not too protective. I thought he may have had to do with what was going on but had his own personal reasons for why he would.

3) How did you feel about Cass essentially skipping her best friend's wedding to go look for Falco? Understandable? Unforgivable? How did you feel about her obligating Siena to cover for her?
Umm I wouldn't exactly say unforgivable but definitely not understandable. And it might just be me, but friends comes before guys.

4) How did you feel about Luca's reveal of his secret? Would you have been angry at him if you were Cass? Why do you think he felt he couldn't confide in her?
I think it was personal and since he didn't have that much of a personal connection with Cass that he wasn't able to confide in her. I think I may have been angry at first but understand at the end.

5) I initially wanted a different ending regarding "the boys," but came to realize that Cass's decision is kind of the ultimate girl-power choice. How did you feel about her decision?
As I said before, I totally approve!! It's something that she needed to do.

Review: Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2)Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi
352 Pages
Release Date: January 8th, 2013
Publisher: HarpetTeen
Genre: Dystopian
Level: YA
Rating: 5 STARS

Goodreads Summary:

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

MY THOUGHTS:
First off, just look at that cver!! The ombination of blues with the aether and that hot guy on it *swoon* I'm not sure if the guy is supposed to be Roar or Perry, though...
Through the Ever Night was just FABULOUS!! While Under the Never Sky was a pretty good novel, Veronica Rossi had my mind blown with it's sequel!! Through the Ever Night kept a steady pace and the words just flowed throughout the pages. I didn't even realize I finished the book, till I saw that I reached the acknowledgments *sheepish look*...

And things aren't all jolly now that Perry and Aria are together. Perry has to deal with being a Blood Lord and holding his brother and father's reputation. He has to prepare for raids and manage everything else on top of that. Add to the fact that Aria, a half-dweller that's also an Aud, comes to Tides, things aren't settling well with the people of Tides. Luckily, she has Roar to support her. Aria has changed so much since we last saw her in UtNS and she's now this stronger, and awesomer version of herself. I really do envy her strength throughout the entire book; she deals with the insults at her and tries to hide that it does not hurt her.

As for Roar..THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HIM. HE IS JUST PERFECT IN EVERY SINGLE WAY POSSIBLE!!! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! His relationship with Aria is so real and beautiful and just uggh sweet!!!! I would totally ship them if there was remotely a chance they could be together..but I doubt it. Roar and Aria understand each well and they're both each other's rocks. You can't not love them!! The more I see Roar, the harder I fall  for him...

As for the romance, Perry and Aria are sweet. It's good to know even throughout their separation, their feelings remained the same. But I felt like there wasn't much interaction/moments with them together. And then there's Kirra, who came to help from Sable's nation an someone my fingers itched to slap. I actually wanted to slap Perry for doing what he did but I guess it was inevitable... Perry also starts pondering as Roar and Aria as a couple. He starts doubting himself but he eventually learns from his mistakes. And as cool as you are Perry, Roar has already stolen my heart.

Overall, Through the Ever Night, will keep you reading an anxiously awaiting he next book. Even if you weren't that big of a UtNS fan, you will DEVOUR it! Trust me on this one. And all UtNS, you will be left breathless! Enjoy...

Venom Readalong Week 3

Here are my answers for Week 3!! Don't forget to check out my review HERE!

1) Cass rarely goes anywhere without her dutiful handmaid Siena in tow. Would you like to have your own handmaid? Why or why not?
As cool as that would be, I feel like I wouldn't have any freedom. And I enjoy my privacy thank you very much!

2) It was very unusual for noblewomen in 1600 to be allowed to study, and later in the trilogy we will find out information about Agnese that explains why she allowed Cass this luxury. What subjects would you study if you were allowed to pick anything you liked?
English/Literature, History, and a bunch of foreign languages!!! Oh and if archery counts, then I totally would do that!! Bows and arrows are so kick-butt!

4) If there's a balance between brave and stupid, where does Cass fall when she sneaks out of the house to go investigate the chapel at San Giuda by herself?
Both, I'm pretty sure she knew it was a stupid decision but that's also brave of her since she hasn't encountered or have actually broken any rules before...

5) Have you ever wanted to know something so badly that you put yourself in danger to get your answers?
No I've never wanted so badly that I put myself in danger to get my answers. Unless you count the wrath of my parents...

6) Do you think it is all right to expect more from book characters than from real people?
It might not be alright but it's a reflexive nature/thought. The impossible or unpredictable usually occurs in books so we do expect more from the characters in order for them to solve the problem.

7) What was your initial thought when you saw what Falco was doing in the graveyard attached to San Giuda?
Suspicious.

8) Did it seem horrible to you or not that big of a deal? Do you think your age or culture or religious beliefs affect how you felt?
It wasn't that big of a deal and I think that's only because it's a book and not happening in reality. I do think someone older (ex: my mom) who is reading this book might be affected more of what happened than I am both religiously and culturally.

It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through . . . and who she can’t live without.

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1)“He was the fantasy of every girl in the country. He was so far out of realm, her world, that she should have stopped thinking about him the second the door had closed. Should stop thinking about him immediately. Should never think about him again, except maybe as a client - and her prince.
And yet, the memory of his fingers against her skin refused to fade.”

Review: Venom by Fiona Paul

Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #1)Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose #1) by Fiona Paul
432 Pages
Release Date: October 30th, 2012
Publisher: Philomel
Genre: Mystery/Historical Fiction
Level: YA
Rating: 4 STARS
Source: Library

Goodreads Summary:

Cassandra Caravello is one of Renaissance Venice’s lucky elite: with elegant gowns, sparkling jewels, her own lady’s maid, and a wealthy fiancé, she has everything a girl could desire. Yet ever since her parents’ death, Cassandra has felt trapped, alone in a city of water, where the dark and labyrinthine canals whisper of escape.

When Cass stumbles upon a murdered woman—practically in her own backyard—she’s drawn into a dangerous world of courtesans, killers, and secret societies. Soon, she finds herself falling for Falco, a mysterious artist with a mischievous grin... and a spectacular skill for trouble. Can Cassandra find the murderer, before he finds her? And will she stay true to her fiancé, or succumb to her uncontrollable feelings for Falco?

Beauty, love, romance, and mystery weave together in a stunning novel that’s as seductive and surprising as the city of Venice itself.

MY THOUGHTS:
Ahh a mystery in Venice during the Renaissance with a certain blue eyed painter...who wouldn't be able to resist? Oh I haven't read a good mystery or even historical fiction (at least I think it is..correct me if I'm wrong) in such a long time! Fiona Paul did a brilliant job capturing the heart of the Renaissance and Venice itself!! She used Venice's setting to her advantage when writing Venom and I'm glad setting was important. Usually authors don't make a big deal out of the setting even if it could come to use.

I just loved the plot of Venom!! There were many unexpected twists that had me frustrated but it made the book awesomer! I seriously kept thinking I knew who the murderer was but when it was revealed....face palm!!! Fiona just keeps you guessing till the very end of the book! She also shows both sides to Venice..the one Cass lived in and the one Cass never thought of living in.

As for the characters, they were decent. Cass felt like a good heroine but too trusting. Especially when it comes to Falco. I mean DUDE you just met him! And he's in a graveyard...does that not make you suspect anything??? But I liked that she wasn't a snob and actually wanted to find the murderer even though she knew it meant risking her life and going out of her safety zone. Falco annoyed me and while he may have genuinely liked Cass but they just didn't seem to click in my opinion. I will however say though that I really enjoyed his mysterious aura and awesome blue eyes! Luca, her fiancé, is a sweet character, nothing extraordinary. He protected Cass as much as he could, cudos to him for that. But he was pretty sexist thinking that woman weren't as capable as guys. And guys back then may have thought like that, but it still bothered me.

The romance had me conflicted. As I said before, I felt that Cass and Falco didn't have a connection. And it seemed like they didn't know each other that well. Their relationship or whatever they had seemed like it took a fast turn even though it kinda escalated in the middle of the book. I'm still kinda iffy on Luca's and Cass's relationship. It would help if I saw them interact more and see more on how Luca felt. But I am really glad at how Fiona ended the book and how she dealt with it. I'm neutral on this one, although I may be leaning toward Luca...

Overall, Venom will capture your hearts through Cass's adventure and of course the beautiful city of Venice. Historical fiction has never been my favorite genre but Venom totally change my view on what I thought about it. When you read it just remember: Everyone has their secrets ;P

Mini-Review: The Next Forever by Lisa Burnstein

The Next ForeverThe Next Forever by Lisa Burnstein
Release Date: January 14th, 2013
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Genre: Contemporary
Level: New Adult
Source: Publisher
Rating: 3.5 STARS

Goodreads Summary:

One night in college can change everything…

Away at college, Amy just wants one night alone without her high school sweetheart, Joe. So when he invites her to go to the library, she heads off on her own instead. How she ended up at a house party with the mysterious bad-boy Trevor is another story…

Joe so isn’t going to the library. He needs space from Amy, too, so he’s decided to rush a fraternity, to get back the swagger he had in high school. But it doesn’t take long for the brothers to invite him to the real rush here the beer is flowing and one particular girl has set her eyes on Joe.

Over the course of one wild night, both Amy and Joe will have to decide if their futures belong with two new people, or whether the next forever will have their first loves in it.

The Next Forever was a great refresher from all the other paranormal/dystopian novels that I've been reading. It's the perfect, short, and relaxing read. It's a book of doubts, questions, and loyalty...

Lisa Burnstein had me captivated the instant I started this book! I couldn't put stop! She had me questioning both Amy's and Joe's faith and if they were actually meant to be. Lisa shows the conflicts and temptations that stems from insecurity and honesty within relationships. Amy questions her inner self and "Will you go back to the way you were before?" is always harboring her mind. Joe wants a way in to the fraternity, even though he knows Amy wouldn't want him to. They both meet new characters and rediscovers their selves.

I loved how The Next Forever was written. Kept at a good pace, the book flowed really well. The only thing I didn't like was how that I felt like I met a fake Amy not the real one. And I think that she most definitely can she fun without passing her limits! Other than that, it's a great read most teens will enjoy! The battle between oneself is revealed and The Next Forever gives an insight on a real and raw relationship where everything isn't perfect...

It's Venom Readalong Week 2!! Hosted by Nikki over at Fiction Freak and Annabelle over at Sparkles and Lightning! These are answere to this week's set of questions! Also look out for my review of Venom on Saturday!!!

1. How do you think Cass felt so out of her element in Chapter 9?
I'm pretty sure she thought it very strange and pretty uncomfortable...I mean even the thought of going to a brothel is kinda freaky and awkward but actually going to one must be 10 times the thought of that.

2. Do you think Cristian rescuing Cass was a coincidence?
I don't believe in coincidences, especially in books. Cristian isn't a guy I would deem harmful but we never know....

3. Do you think the tossing of her stays symbolizes anything? Or is it just a fun scene (that totally made me grin!)?
It symbolizes that she's trying to be free, feeling this other side of her that she never released. And it was also a fun scene that had me cheering, "GO CASS!! EMBRACE THE INNER REBEL!"

4. What do you think of the whispered conversation between Falco and his friends?
Very suspicious and it probably has to do with the secret he's hiding and the real work he does

5. In this chapter, Cass comes across prostitutes up close for the first time and finds herself enthrall we by the strangeness of it. How would you, as a sheltered high-class girl, have reacted?
Ummm most probably the same way Cass reacted. I might have even chickened out at the last minute and let Falco do the work... :P

6. It's obvious Falco is keeping secrets. What do you think they are? Why do you think he's hiding the truth from Cass?
I honestly don't know. Something to do with graveyards, dead bodies, and maybe art? I think he might have thought that Cass would have thought about him differently if he told her this secret of his.

7. When Cass asks Falco, "Why should I trust you?" he responds, "Because you want to." Is that a good reason for trust? Why or why not?
No that's most definitely not a good reason to trust someone. I mean if it was someone who she knew for a long time then yeah that would be a reasonable reason to trust someone. But she hasn't known Falco for that long and I just don't think it's a good reason to.

Questions from Fiona:

1. Venom has been (rightfully) accused of having dialogue and syntax that is too modern for its period. This was intentional, though I did try my best not to use anachronistic words. I messed up a couple of times at least--words like "okay" and "creepy" did not exist in the 1600s. Did you find the less formal dialogue helpful or distracting? Did it detract from the reading experience?
I found this dialogue pretty helpful and it didn't detract me from the reading experience. I actually didn't notice that it was written in a more modern way. If it was more of an olden, Renaissance kinda dialogue, then I would've been less focused on the book and more bored, even if it was subtle

2. Cass is obviously a virgin, as all proper noblewomen were back then, and a subplot of Venom is her coming to terms with her first sexual feelings. Do you think the book would have been stronger in conveying that idea without the brothel scene? (Obviously some people found it scandalous, which is fine, but the inclusion of it was to use it sort of as a touchstone for Cass's increasing attraction to Falco).
I think the brothel scene was fine. It added more spice to it and it helped explain how Cass felt throughout that whoele experience.

3. What do you think about Cass's interactions with the man in the falcon mask? Does he seem crazy or just mysterious? What do you think about his statement that war can be beautiful?
Mysterious. Mysterious. Mysterious.

4. Why does Cass wait so dang long to read Luca's latest letter, even though she takes notice of it almost every time she passes?
I think Cass is scared that she would have to be married soon, especially with Mada's wedding. And that she   would feel guiltier for hanging out with Falco when she's engaged to Luca and also that she's doing stuff someone with her high class wouldn't even think of doing.

Review: Breathe by Sarah Crossan

Breathe (Breathe, #1)Breathe by Sarah Crossan
373 Pages
Release Date: October 2nd, 2012
Publisher: Greenwillow
Genre: YA Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic
Rating: 3 STARS

Goodreads Summary:

Inhale. Exhale.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe . . .
The world is dead.
The survivors live under the protection of Breathe, the corporation that found a way to manufacture oxygen-rich air.

Alina
has been stealing for a long time. She's a little jittery, but not terrified. All she knows is that she's never been caught before. If she's careful, it'll be easy. If she's careful.

Quinn
should be worried about Alina and a bit afraid for himself, too, but even though this is dangerous, it's also the most interesting thing to happen to him in ages. It isn't every day that the girl of your dreams asks you to rescue her.

Bea
wants to tell him that none of this is fair; they'd planned a trip together, the two of them, and she'd hoped he'd discover her out here, not another girl.

And as they walk into the Outlands with two days' worth of oxygen in their tanks, everything they believe will be shattered. Will they be able to make it back? Will they want to?

Venom Readalong Week 1

Hey! This post is to answer a few questions for the Venom Readalong.
Hosted by Nikki and Annabelle

1. What do you think of Falco so far? Do you trust him?
Do I trust Falco? Now that's a really good question..but honestly not really. He's really mysterious and I'm still iffy on him. I feel like he has his own intention for investigating more about the murder than for Cass.

2. Thoughts on Sienna?
Ohhhh I just adore Sienna!!! Especially now knowing that she has a wild side after all ;)She's such a great and loyal friend to Cass. I just want to hug the life out of her!!

3. If you were in Cass's place, would you sneak out and try to solve it or try your best to shake it off?
I probably would've shook it off but curiosity probably would've gotten the best from me. It's not the first time that happened. And I think I would've enjoyed the thrill of of it all. I mean with a cute guy in VENICE?? Who wouldn't?!?!

4. Is it stupid of Cass to trust Falco so much? Would you, in her place?
Oh yes! Defintely dumb for trusting Falco that much! And I wouldn't trust Flaco if I was in her place. I may have partnered up with him to help investigate, but I would try to keep my guard up and not have easily gave my trust, especially in a situation like that.

5. Do you think Cass' Aunt Agnese is smothering her?
Honestly, if I was Cass I would feel I was being smothered by Aunt Agnese. But if I were in Aunt Agnese's place, then I kinda see why she's like how she is. I think Aunt Agnese should at least give Cass some freedom or else Cass would just probably rebel.

6. Do you think that Cass is too accepting or not accepting enough of her position in society, or do you feel she is just accepting enough?
I think Cass is accepting enough of her position in society. She doesn't really take advantage of her place in society nor does she flaunt it.

Waiting on Wednesday #16

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine where you have a chance to let other know what you can’t wait to claim as your own.

This week's WoW: The Collector by Victoria Scott
                              Release Date: April 2nd, 2013
                              Publisher: Entangled Teen

The Collector (Dante Walker, #1)

Goodreads Summary:
He makes good girls...bad.

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence has made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple, weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big, red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal opportunity collector and doesn’t want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within 10 days.

Dante doesn’t know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky, Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect—he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector, and uncover emotions deeply buried.

Why I want this book? B/c it looks flippin awesome!! Entangled Teen sure does know how to pick books with hot guys! I feel like I'm going to dislike Dante because of how arrogant he seems but just love him at the same :P And come one, who doesnt love soul collectors ;D

What's your "waiting on" pick this week?
