The Thing About Books: Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter

It's week 3 of the Gallagher Girls series readathon and we've read DON'T JUDGE A GIRL BY HER COVER this week! There ARE SPOILERS from this book and ones before so be warned!!!
Go read it and come back to our discussion!

~Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover~
Taherah
Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover (DJGHC) is definitely a game changer in the Gallagher Girls series.

Caitlyn
It twisted the whole series from spy school girls falling in love to....well spy school girls falling in love while dealing with a lot of dangerous other shit at the same time

Taherah
Exactly..things get way more serious yet Ally Carter manages to awesomely add the lightness and humor in her books

Caitlyn
That's so true I have never thought of the GG series as dark but now that I think about...they kind of are.....in a really bizarre, real life but not really way.

Taherah
Yeah they're not exactly what you'd hope to go through WHILE you're in spy school still you know learning

Caitlyn
But the Operatives deal with better than most adult spies would (at least I think so, the only other group of people who I think could handle it better would be if all the teachers ( Mr. Solomon, Cammie's mom, Aunt Abby, etc) teamed up

Taherah
I agree. They do! And meaning that if the adults teamed up to teach them??

Caitlyn
No like if any group put in the Operatives' situation could handle it better than them it would be the teachers

Taherah
Ahhhhh of course...they have waaay more experience...Speaking of experience SOLOMON AND ABBY OMG SHIPSHIPSHIP they sure have history and inside jokes

Caitlyn
I know!!! I love it so much!!!!! And Abby is so badass!!!!!!! They are kinda a perfect partner pair (of combat....among other things)...parabatai if you will

Taherah
No actually I don't think parabatai would work for them..Abby seems more of a solo person. But YES LOVE ABBY WHO IS SO VERY AWESOME

Caitlyn
I loved it when she walked in I was like "Who du fuuuuuu- no nevermind I don't care who she is she's awesome"

Taherah
It was like BOOM cool person in the house and everyone knew it.

Caitlyn
Including Joe Solomon OH! Can we talk about how Zach randomly shows up everywhere?

Taherah
When I first read it I never actually questioned it (bad reader I know) but I just wanted to go with it and see what would happen and hopefully get an explanation (which we technically didn't fully get)

Caitlyn
TRUE OMG I want an explanation!!!!!! I noticed I just forgot in all the Zammie that followed to question it further!! (Is Zammie the right word for it ....Cach??)

Taherah
Zammie I think is the official ship name.

Caitlyn
Oh good

Taherah
And we kinda do get an idea of what Zach was doing after book 4/5

Caitlyn
But we still never really get the WHOLE story

Taherah
But we DO get why

Caitlyn
True

Taherah
Anywhooooo! Let's talk Macey and Preston (Who are waaaaay too cute!!)

Caitlyn
I don't remember much of this but ok!

Taherah
Lol I shall fangirl! DUUUUUDE WHEN THEY FIRST KISS GAH SO CUTE AND WEIRD FOR CAMMIE EXCEPT KINDA NOT SINCE SHE WAS WITH ZACH...hidden in a box...on a train..the norm

Caitlyn
Okay I love how awkward Preston is and how much he wants to impress Macey and how even though she totally ignores him at first...she starts to see him!

Taherah
Yeah its so cute yet expected but unexpected at the same time if that makes sense

Caitlyn
It does! Because the beautiful girl ends up with the geeky (well in this book) guy

Taherah
It's just so adorable I can't get over it XD

Caitlyn
I feel exactly the same way about this XD.....and just about every other ship in this series (except Josh he can go die in a hole)

Taherah
*laughs* Well we don't see him in this book (only mentioned once) And yes agreed.
OHOHOH AND ABBY'S SURPRISE KISS TO SOLOMON IN WHICH EVERYONE FREAKED AT OVER

Caitlyn
OF COURSE HOW COULD WE MISS THAT

Taherah
IT WAS JUST SO UNEXPECTED AND LIKE GO ABBY!!

Caitlyn
Dude everything Abby does is like GO ABBY

Taherah
So true :P But this is a special moment

Caitlyn
*sigh* :) its a very, very special one especially ;) for Solomon

Taherah
*grins* That it is ;P
Ohoh and Circle of Cavan after Cammie! Interesting change of direction!

Caitlyn
I was just SO not expecting that. That one was a shock to me

Taherah
Right?! I felt so bad for Cammie especially since she found out that her mom and people knew that they were after her not Macey

Caitlyn
That might have been when I lost faith in all the adults in this series. I mean I know they're spies and I shouldn't have trusted them to begin with but come on!

Taherah
SERIOUSLY! It was just annoying I mean they should know that Cammie would do anything if her friends were in danger even if that meant putting herself in danger which I'm assuming they wouldn't have wanted but just UGH

Caitlyn
AND her friends would have done exactly the same! Be it Cammie or Macey!!! Also it just made Cammie ok with sacrificing herself to save Macey because she thinks they don't want her BUT THEY DO!!!!! It makes it so that the person the Operatives think they have to save IS THE WRONG PERSON!!!

Taherah
EXACTLY...*le sigh* I really did like this book and the way Ally Carter was able to easily direct us into this huge plot of the series.

Caitlyn
*nods* It made the series have a purpose while tying everything together with a nice little bow

Taherah
Yup a definite 5 stars from me :)

Caitlyn

Book Blitz: Camp Boyfriend by J.K Rock {Promo+Excerpt+Giveaway}

Camp Boyfriend (Camp Boyfriend #1)
Release Date: 07/02/13
From Spencer Hill Press

Summary from Goodreads:
The summer
of her dreams is about to get a reality check.
They said it couldn't be done, but geeky sophomore Lauren Carlson transformed
herself into a popular girl after moving to a new school halfway across the
country. Amazing what losing her braces and going out for cheerleading will do.
Only trouble is, the popular crowd is wearing on Lauren's nerves and she can't
wait to return to summer camp where she's valued for her brain instead of her
handsprings. She misses her old friends and most of all, her long time
camp-only boyfriend, Seth. This year she intends to upgrade their relationship
to year-round status once she's broken up with her new, jock boyfriend, Matt.
He doesn't even begin to know the real her, a girl fascinated by the night sky
who dreams of discovering new planets and galaxies.
But Matt isn't giving her up without a fight. As he makes his case to stay
together, Lauren begins to realize his feelings run deeper than she ever would
have guessed. What if the guy she thought she was meant to be with forever
isn't really The One? Returning to Camp Juniper Point was supposed to ground
her uprooted life, but she's more adrift than ever. Everything feels different
and soon Lauren's friends are turning on her and both guys question what she
really wants. As summer tensions escalate, Lauren wonders if she's changed more
than she thought. Will her first big discovery be herself?

EXCERPT:
“If you don’t play football, what will you do this fall?” Thunder rolled through the camp, sending the last of the families scurrying indoors, leaving Matt and I alone in the narrow, shadowed space.

Matt cupped the back of my head and he lowered his nose until it touched mine. “This,” he whispered, then captured my lips in a kiss more electrifying than the war nature waged outside. His mouth was gentle at first, but the pressure grew more insistent until we both gasped for breath.
My head whirled and I thought I’d black out until he lowered me to the bench.
The warmth of his bare chest seeped into my soaked tank, the drumming of his heart faster than the clattering rain. His lips left mine and travelled along my jaw to my earlobe. I shuddered when he lightly nibbled, the shock of pleasure intense.

My hands slid along his back, the muscles bunching beneath my touch. I traced the ridge of muscle above his hip and felt him tremble, his breath growing ragged. But when his fingers tugged up the hem of my shirt I was the one who sounded winded. His palms skimmed upward against my ribcage until they cupped my flesh, driving me crazy. Only another kiss kept me from making a noise. The storm was loud, but I didn’t want to risk alerting others that we were behind the water curtain flowing in front of the dugout.

“Matt,” I gasped, loving the feel of his hands on me, the pressure of his hips against mine. I was as hot as a stoked furnace, heat sizzling everywhere at once. My fingers buried themselves in the thick hair at the nape of his neck and I pressed my lips to his, wanting more of him.

He pulled me up and onto his lap. My hair dripped down my back as my head lolled, his mouth leaving a trail of fire along my neck before dipping lower to my clavicle and lower still. I kissed his brow, his temple, and his square jaw while his mouth explored. I wanted it to go on and on, but suddenly he pulled back, his chest rising and falling like one of those old-time bellows I’d seen on a school field trip.

His face was fierce, intense, every handsome feature sharpened. His hungry eyes were backlit with fire as they roamed over me. Why had he stopped?
“Lauren,” he said when it seemed he’d finally caught his breath. I’d never seen him this winded, not even after the endless sprints of football practice. “If we go any farther I won’t be able to stop.” His eyes searched mine, willing me to understand what he was saying.
“Oh.” My cheeks went up in flames and scrambled off his lap. Thank god the heavy waterfall had obscured us from view. I repositioned my bra and tugged down my tank top. I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling a headache coming on.
“Hey.” Matt lifted my chin until I was forced to meet his warm blue-green eyes, the color as inviting as a Caribbean vacation brochure. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You’re my girlfriend. I love you.”

My heart seized. He’d dropped the L-bomb. We’d skirted around the word for months, saying things like, “I love that about you” or just a casual “Love ya” that sounded like friends. But this. It was huge. What to say? The obvious answer was no answer, but a fierce need to return the words clawed to the surface and fought its way out.
“I love you too.”

He crushed me against his chest, his hands twining in my frizzing waves.  I did love him, I marveled. His warmth. His sense of humor. His strength of purpose and conviction. But was I in love with him? That was the bigger question. One I had no clue how to answer.
