Snow Like Ashes by Sarah Raasch
Release Date: October 14th, 2014
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Genre: Fantasy
Level: YA
Goodreads Summary:
A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.
Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

I have been waiting SO long for this to come out. This has been the absolute worst wait for me EVER because I want the next book and THE FIRST ONE HASNT EVEN COME OUT YET!!!! Seriously, its June 29th right now (as I'm writing this) that's how long I've been waiting. Longer really, I read this a couple of weeks ago. But. Just. Let me tell you. Snow Like Ashes? Kick ASS! You want to read this book, you really do. I want to read this book FOR you, I would if I could. Really, its that spectacular. OH and you probably don't understand this, but you will when you read the book; I CALLED IT. I called ALL of it XD and it didn't make the book any less amazing and wonderful and spectacular. And this book is fantasy! I seriously just can't even explain the depth of my feelings for this book.
Meiraaaaaa. She is so great. I love how contradictory she is. I mean in a lot of ways she is weak and out of her depth but then at the same time she is so strong and brave and wonderful and amazing. She gets put through so BAD things and she come out the other side and still manages to go on. I honestly am not sure how much else I can say about her except that she's really amazing and brave and relatable and just all around great. Now Mather. I like him. I really do, but even from the get go I didn't really want him to be with Meira *ducks behind Taherah* IM SORRY. He's cool and badass but he's kinda...mopey and closed off. I mean he's her best friend and he just like doesn't tell her about things or won't listen to how she feels sometimes and it just kinda...rubbed me the wrong way. But not a lot. Overall I liked him, just not with Meira. You know who I did (and do) like with Meira? THERON. All I'm going to say is he's great and I love him and you will too.
Have I mentioned I love this world Sara Raasch created? Because I do. A lot. It's so interesting and cool. Especially the Season kingdoms and how their citizens have adapted to the seasons they live in. I also love how quickly the story line moves and how your feelings towards characters change and develop so much. Most of the time once you figure out a character you've figured them out and your feelings towards them don't really change, only grow, but I distinctly remember changing my opinion drastically for at least two different characters.
In conclusion all of you should go out and buy Snow Like Ashes. Right now. Don't worry, I'll wait...Seriously though this book is really really REALLY good and you need to read it. Soon. Like Taherah and I got an ARC (advanced reader copy) to read and I still went out to the store to get Snow Like Ashes because I needed it. AND THE COVER IS SO PRETTY AND ITS REALLY GOOD. If you like fantasy even slightly read this book. Ok. I'm done now. (its really amazing) Byyyyyeeeeee.

No words can correctly describe all the FEELS I had for this book and just how beautiful and amazing it is. From the world to the characters, IT'S ALL JUST WRITTEN SO WELL AND IT'S JUST PLAIN FANTASTIC. I haven't read a book this good in such a long time and I honestly just think anyone should just go and read it. Ok ok so the world: I LOVE the whole concept of the the different seasons and how each is a kingdom. It's the first in a fantasy book where it's based liked that and it's just so original! What I also liked was that there was already a problem with the Winter kingdom and how it started from there. And guys the book went full circle. Like the goal was actually accomplished in one book (mostly). I honestly expected for it to finish at a certain point because that's usually where the cliffhanger would be BUT IT DIDN'T and that made so happy!
Meira was an exceptional character. She was so easy to relate to (I honestly would love to be her friend) and didn't stray from her character one bit. I loved seeing her determination in the beginning of the book and I loved how she handled all the situations she was put in no matter how bad it got. She went through so much more than I anticipated and she held her head up as much as she could. And just so much love her! As for Mather, her best friend, he was sweet and cute and while I didn't necessarily agree with some of his decisions, I loved him nonethelesss. He made a great friend and not exactly someone I would ship with Meira (I'M SORRY MATHER FANS *hides) But if we're talking Theron, oh how much I loved this boy right when Meira first saw him. I just knew he was my next (fictional) love and man did he steal my heart.
Honestly, so many things happened like this review is so glossed over it's not even funny o.o When you actually read the book, everything goes into context and it makes much more sense. It was hard to not include stuff because I for one feel like it would totally ruin the story. SO with that said, GO GET A COPY AND READ IT AND LOVE IT AND FANGIRL AND EXPERIENCE THE FEELS!! While I recommend this to all YA fans, it's technically more for fantasy lovers who I hope love it as much as we do! Happy Readings!
