The Excerpt

Jackson nodded and lifted his hand again. I stepped forward, swallowing any doubt as he reached out, one hand cupping my cheek, the other grasping my hand lightly, tracing circles with his thumb and before I could worry about how those circles made me melt inside, the memory slammed into me.

"Margaret!" Gemma shouted with glee. "Come out of there, I know you are trying to scare me!"

I watched the young red-haired girl put her hands on her hips, trying to be brave. She scanned their father's study, narrowing her eyes. The fire roaring in the hearth was the only source of light in the room, casting dark shadows across the furniture.

Maggie hid behind her father's chair, in silent wait for her prey.
"I'm going to tell Mother!"

Maggie's little hands tightened on the chair but she didn't make a sound. I walked over to her, watching her mouth twist up into a sly grin. She was the older of the girls, but she protected her sister fiercely, proclaiming she was the only one who could tease her. Gemma hated when Maggie played games, but it thrilled Maggie no end and I could feel excited anticipation roll off her in waves.

Gemma's bravery faltered as she stepped forward toward the overstuffed armchair, expecting her sister to jump out at her at any moment.

But Maggie waited. She had incredible patience, but I sensed that part of it was stubbornness and a desire to test boundaries. Her head poked out from behind the chair just as Gemma turned toward the love seat. I watched as Maggie slowly came out of her hiding spot and charged at her sister.

Gemma let out a scream but Maggie covered her sister's mouth with her hand. Both girls collapsed on the floor, Gemma's muffled squeals threatening to break through Maggie's tiny fingers.

"Shh," Maggie cooed.

Gemma managed to wrestle her mouth away from Maggie's hand. "I hate you!" Her indignation faltered into a fit of giggles and Maggie quickly joined her.

As she helped her sister up from the floor Maggie said, "Gemma. You need to always expect the unexpected. You can't go through life being scared all the time." Even though Maggie was a mere nine years old, she spoke as if she'd lived lifetimes before. It was one of the things that drew me to her more than any other Prognatum I'd watched.

Maggie took a handkerchief and wiped her sister's cheeks.

"A lady wouldn't do that to her sister," Gemma said, finally relaxing.

"I don't want to be a lady," Maggie stated firmly. "I want to see the world and not just make babies for the rest of my life."

Gemma shook her head. "That's what we are supposed to do. That's what Mother does."

Maggie's indignation flowed through her and into me. I knew Maggie was born to follow through with her Prognatum duties, she just didn't know it yet. It was rare for a Prognatum to want the Guard position but Maggie would be thrilled when her father revealed it to her at seventeen.

As Maggie reached down to help Gemma up from the floor she whispered, "It's not for me."

Gemma wrapped her sister in a tight hug. "I will love you either way, dear sister."

Maggie rested her head against Gemma's shoulder. "I love you too."

I fell out of the memory just as quickly as I'd fallen in, my legs shaking.

The Thing About Books: Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hey guys! This week we'll be discussing ORIGIN by Jennifer L. Armentrout!
**THERE ARE SPOILERS FROM THIS BOOK AND THE SERIES**
Please don't continue this post unless you want to spoiled! Go read the series/book and come back and discuss with us!

~Origin~
Taherah Abbas
Origin was absolutely mind boggling

Caitlyn Crowe
Hell I'm not really sure how to react to it...at all

Taherah Abbas
Right?! Especially the end! It took me a while to comprehend and for it to soak up in my head

Caitlyn Crowe
This was my exact reaction: Wait......what just??? Because they were??? But.....huh???? Wait, hold on a second. Wait just one goddamn second. NO. We just got them out and back together and now they aren't again?!?!?! NO! Just, no! And wtf was that anyways! Were they brainwashed? Was it a special alien power their leaders have? If so, who's the leader? Or have they all just been lying this whole time? Where are they going anyways? To war??? Back to outer space and a new planet??? GAAAAAAAH *throws hands up in to the air* IM DONE! JUST NO

Taherah Abbas
EXACTLY. When I started this series I DID NOT expect THIS. This is huge and way bigger than anyone. LIKE WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN NOW??

Caitlyn Crowe
And it so did not get all south western (like the *shudders* awful cover suggests) if anything it got darker, like jeez. There was death, torture, betrayal, secrets, the whole shebang

Taherah Abbas
Seriously. Just no to the cover. I think this book was way too crazy for me to like as much as the other books

Caitlyn Crowe
Re-read that sentence and tell me what you mean cuzz i dont get it

Taherah Abbas
Like it was too much (the plot and shizzle) for me to like as much as I liked the other books in the series. Make sense?

Caitlyn Crowe
Yes better (not great but better) I don't know...for me it seemed more straight forward than the other books but its probably because at this point I care about a thousand times more about the characters than the actual plot and this book was the most emotionally stable (for the most part) and there were lots of "ITS SO FLUFFY IM GONNA DIE!" moments

Taherah Abbas
It was actually. Ok can we please talk about the Katy and Daemon GETTING MARRIED part??

Caitlyn Crowe
RIGHT OMG I DIED

Taherah Abbas
I think I'm the black sheep who did not like that happening

Caitlyn Crowe
:) I know you are because its adorable and its what people do who are in love and don't know if they will live out the day

Taherah Abbas
Butbutbut its like if youre going to marry the person u love might as well make it memorable and pretty and with people there to see the happy moment

Caitlyn Crowe
Well, to them I don't think it means they are actually married legally. For them it was just the fact that they were in their minds they needed to be connected to each other in some tangible way that was meaningful and magical. They needed that promise. A promise that one day things would get better and they would get married for real. He would see her in a white dress and him in a suit and they would be together forever but until they could get that they would settle for it just on paper with their fake names

Taherah Abbas
Wow you defended that really well...AND THEIR FAKE NAMES ANNA WHIT AND KAIDAN ROWE OMG JLA I LOVE YOU FOR ADDING THIS

Caitlyn Crowe
RIGHT HOLY CRAP WHEN I SAW THAT I DID A FUCKING HAPPY DANCE AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT MEANS ANNA AND KAI ARE MARRIED AND OMG WHAT IF ITS FORESHADOWING BUT IN A DIFFERENT BOOK and I'm gonna shut up now

Taherah Abbas
AHHHHH SO HAPPY AND DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!!! AND THEY TECHNICALLY ARE ;P BUT it's still a fictional world soooooooo idk

Caitlyn Crowe
My only problem was that any self respecting book nerd of Katy's caliber *cough cough* us too *cough cough* would remember strait away who Anna and Kai were it wouldn't even take a whole second for it to register and click and cause an explosion of happiness

Taherah Abbas
Weeeeell she did just escape from Area 51 and considering that she hasn't even read a book in months, she's excused by me

Caitlyn Crowe
Nope. Immediate no excuses BUT ANYWAYS

Taherah Abbas
What?

Caitlyn Crowe
Dude, the origin thing...freaky

Taherah Abbas
OMG YES. Especially since Katy described them as Damiens' from Omen. SCARY LITTLE BUGGERS

Caitlyn Crowe
They are really creepy...and Beth's pregnant and wow

Taherah Abbas
Seriously. And the Beth thing=ANNOYING >.< I never liked Beth in the first place and only tolerated her b/c of Dawson but even then Dawson got a bit more irritating and Beth was just irritating

Caitlyn Crowe
I mean...I guess in this book she had a reason...but jeez girl get over it, move on, get stronger and don't let it happen again

Taherah Abbas
True but yeah. Alsooooooooo I really love Archer

Caitlyn Crowe
I ship him and Dee, not a lot, but enough

Taherah Abbas
Yup yup. And then there's that scene where they reveal themselves *headdesk*

Caitlyn Crowe
UGH NO JUST NO! Like seriously? You couldn't find any other way to get out of there?? None???

Taherah Abbas
Right????? I for one didn't think it was necessary and just a plain stupid idea

Caitlyn Crowe
Right. I knew right then and there it was not ending well and just skimmed till it was over and while everyone was sad and crying I was like "good you deserve it. It was your own damn fault"

Taherah Abbas
I still don't think that Paris, Ash, and Andrew should've payed for the price :/

Caitlyn Crowe
No that I was sad about...well Paris at least, I don't know...it wasn't like it irritated me it was more like I was disappointed in their choices but resigned to the fact that they were going to fuck everything up

Taherah Abbas
Yeah...Ash and Andrew grew on me and I felt like they should have been with them till the end. Idk but stuff just a whole lot bigger

Caitlyn Crowe
I didn't ever really like them, but yeah at least one of them should have made it till at the very least the last 5 chapters of the final book

Taherah Abbas
Basically. AND MATTHEWS BETRAYAL :O

Caitlyn Crowe
*scrunches up nose in disgust* ugh, just ugh.

Taherah Abbas
Like really? Just no

Caitlyn Crowe
I can't even I. Just. No.

Taherah Abbas
Overall I think I would give this book a 4.5 stars.

Caitlyn Crowe
Ditto

Goodreads Summary:

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone.
