Blog Tour: The Summer of Chasing Mermaids {Interview+Giveaway}

The Summer of Chasing Mermaids
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: June 2nd 2015
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Retellings, Chick Lit

Synopsis:
The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.

Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.

Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.

When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . .

1. Describe Summer of Chasing Mermaids in less than 10 words.
An empowering, romantic beach read with a pinch of magic!

2. Is this character or plot driven?
Like my previous YA novels, THE SUMMER OF CHASING MERMAIDS is definitely character driven. I love watching a character grow and transform over the course of a story. There’s a plot, of course, but the focus is on Elyse’s emotional journey as she comes to terms with her tragic loss, falls in love, and rediscovers her inner voice.

3. Are you personally charmed by the ocean?
Absolutely! I love the sea. In fact, after living in Colorado for many years, my husband and I decided to move to Washington state last summer, inspired by an earlier trip we took to research the Oregon setting of the novel. I love being close to the ocean!

4. Do you have any personal experiences on board a ship/boat?
No, but I’m fascinated by maritime culture. Since moving to WA, I’ve met quite a few people who spend month at a time at sea, and who make their living on the ocean. It’s amazing.

5. If someone were to see you in a random public place where would it be and why?
Most likely it’ll be at the local taco truck, which is walking distance from my house. My burrito addiction is a little out of control!

6. Which YA character would you like to hang out with?
Blue Sargent from Maggie Stiefvater’s THE RAVEN BOYS series. I love those books, and Blue and her friends and family are such a rich, interesting characters. I’d love to be immersed in her world for a little while!
