The Thing About Books: This Shattered World by Meagan Spooner & Amie Kaufman

(New banneeeeeeer!!! Isn't is pretty :D)

So we haven't done this feature in a while now and just to recap to those who are new to the blog: The Thing About Books is a feature in which Caitlyn and I talk about (usually fangirl) over books we love and need to talk about them. But this also means there will always be spoilers.
Soooo please only continue reading this post if you've already read the book for this post:

This Shattered World by Meagan Spooner & Amie Kaufman
 Release Date: December 23rd, 2014
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Goodreads Summary:
The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.
Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.
Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.
(But seriously, don't read the rest of this post if you haven't read this book yet because we literally start the rest of the post with a spoiler!!)
~This Shattered World~
Caitlyn Crowe:
I really like Tarver. I know it has nothing to do with anything and he's barely in this one but I really REALLY like him. Like him, like him. And I was super ecstatic when I read he and Lilac were in this book. Like more excited than any sane person should be.

Taherah Abbas
XD Having Tarver in the book made my day! Also him and Lilac are super super cute and adorable and hilarious and I miss them so much

Caitlyn Crowe
I want them always. I want a mini Tarver and Lilac to keep in my house so whenever I feel down I can look at them and be happy again.

Taherah Abbas
And I will visit :D Ok but that scene where Tarver and Lilac were video chatting each other and she didn't know that there were other people in the room while she was blatantly flirting/being intimate with him was so funny
I died from laughing

Caitlyn Crowe
ME TOO AND LIKE WHEN LEE GOT UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY KISSING I JUST ABOUT DIED

Taherah Abbas
And when Flynn was blushing when they video chatted XD It was great

Caitlyn Crowe
I kinda love them all. Admittedly my love for Lilac and Tarver is slightly greater but still

Taherah Abbas
Its not even slightly for me. I just plain love them more :P Especially Tarver
No offense to Flynn and Lee who are awesome

Caitlyn Crowe
Yes. Okay, we need to talk about This Shattered World now or this will just become the "I love Tarver and These Broken Stars" show

Taherah Abbas
Which I'm pretty sure we already did :P

Caitlyn Crowe
we could spiral
I know us

Taherah Abbas
Truth
Going back to This Shattered World
I kinda really loved that both the military and the settlers/rebels weren't bad guys
Like they may have opposed each other but in the end they all believed what they were raised with and it just had nothing to do with them personally

Caitlyn Crowe
Yes, I really loved how hard it was for (impossible actually) to decide which side I truly thought was right. That's part of what made this book so hard, I couldn't get mad at either of the characters for feeling the way they did and doing things because of that

Taherah Abbas
Exactly. Especially with seeing both their POVs you can easily understand both sides

Caitlyn Crowe
And I really love how the style of the book stayed the same as the last one and despite the fact that it was a completely different story it still tied together with the first one really well

Taherah Abbas
YES! I wasn't sure it was going to connect back with the whisper/La Roux plot but it made sense that it did especially since it didn't tie up nicely in These Broken Stars

Caitlyn Crowe
Yes, and I honestly can't wait for the last book to tie up all the loose ends (*cough* and too see more Tarver and Lilac) I also loved how we got to see more of the world and the things going on in it like the terraforming (I think that's what it's called) and bigger, main planets and such

Taherah Abbas
Yup yup I did think that the beginning was a bit slow though but I could see why
Caitlyn Crowe
I thought it was both slow and not, I mean within the first few chapters Flynn kidnaps Lee but then at the same time nothing really moves the plot along very much except for random bursts (like the fire and talking to her head officer and Tarver and the whole mass murdering people but) which I both liked and disliked, I liked the time spent getting to know Flynn and Lee but at the same time I really craved more of the excitement and the action too

Taherah Abbas
Yup basically. But once the beginning stuff occurred and they started piecing together what was happening, the pace picked up (just like my heart when Tarver entered the book) and it got all the most interesting

Caitlyn Crowe
Wow, even when we aren't talking about Tarver we're talking about Tarver.
(do you we have enough?)

Taherah Abbas
*coughs* I couldn't help it

Caitlyn Crowe
XD because I can!?!?!?!

Taherah Abbas
(and I think we should add a little bit more)

Caitlyn Crowe
BACK ON TOPIC
You know what I love?

Taherah Abbas
I also liked the way seeing the way the ghost/whisper already connected with Lee ever since she was a kid.
What?

Caitlyn Crowe
Yes, I thought that was really interesting and how that basically kept that whisper sane while its brethren went batshit crazy and decided mass murder of the human race was the answer to their problems
I love how its sci-fi but not in your face SCI-FI

Taherah Abbas
Explain...

Caitlyn Crowe
Like some sci-fi you read and they spent like four chapters explaining ALL of the differences and modification and changes to reality that were created and it almost feels like the author thinks your an idiot whereas with this series they don't really come out and give long winded explanations for things, they assume with the information you have is enough to clue in on what's going on...maybe it's just me

Taherah Abbas
I understand. But I will say that at the same time it does give out information (little by little if anything) subtly through either dialogue or description. It may not be going over every single thing in detail but they do give you enough information.
I have no idea if that made sense

Caitlyn Crowe
I don't know what I'm saying anymore, I just keep thinking about the world and Tarver and Lee and Tarver and Flynn and that pink haired guy and Lilac and Tarver and now my brain is mush. MUUUUUUUSH

Taherah Abbas
I love this world. And Tarver. I mean the characters. And the authors for creating everything.

Caitlyn Crowe
They are hilarious. (the authors...and the characters...I'm not going to say it) I can't wait for the next ooooonnnnnnnneeeeeeeee especially now after I heard them talk about it at that signing earlier in Januaryyyyyyyyyy

Taherah Abbas
SHHHHHHHHH *CRIES*

Caitlyn Crowe
IT MAY BE WORSE FOR ME I HAVE THESE MEAN LITTLE SNIPPETS THAT TEASE ME ENDLESSLY

Taherah Abbas
BUT YOU STILL HAVE THEM AND GOT TO SEE THEM AGAIN

Caitlyn Crowe
THATS TRUE
I CANT DEAL WITH THIS
5 STARS FROM ME

Taherah Abbas
4-4.5 STARS from moi

  1. Yes I was SUPER happy to see Tarver appear in TSW. He's one of my all time favorite male characters. I thought the story got better once he arrived. 😄
